Sesi tanya jawab dengan narasumber dalam talkshow (Question and answer session with the speakers in the talkshow)

UPH Film Screening is one of the biggest events from Visual Communication Design Study Program of School of Design Universitas Pelita Harapan (SOD – UPH), which presented audio visual works of Cinematography and Animation students. Titled “Dialektik”, the film and animation screening was conducted in two days from Wednesday - Thursday, 15-16 March 2017 at Cinemaxx, Maxx Box Lippo Village, Karawaci, Tangerang.

Since Cinematography concentration UPH started at UPH in 2013, film screening has been done annually and this year is the fourth time. This year there were 60 works presented, consist of 38 animation students’ works, 19 cinematography students’, and 3 film from the collaboration of animation, cinematography and graphic students. Most of the films and animations are works of second-year and third-year students who are making their final projects.

Besides film screening, there was a music performance by Jamaica Café on the first day. On the second day, before the film screening, a talk show was held and there were several professional speakers in the field of cinema: Mr. James & Raymond Wang (Producer, Senior Animator), Dana Riza (Director, Animator), Danial Rifki (Film Director, Script Writer) and Tio Pakusadewo (Senior Actor).

In the talk show, each of the speaker told their life experiences about how they began to find their passions in cinema. Dana Riza, one of the pioneering Indonesian animators who had produced the well-known children animation series “Adit & Sopo Jarwo”, told how he – with architecture education background – finally got interested in animation and cinema. Dana Riza explained how his architecture background education had contributed well in animation-making.

Among some local speakers, there were two international speakers who were invited, that is Mr. James & Raymond Wang as the founder of Wang Film Production. Wang Film Production is the oldest and most prolific Taiwanese-American animation film studio especially for children cinema, which was established in 1978. As a senior animator and filmmaker, Mr. James Wang encouraged the younger generation to continue working in cinema.

Elya Kurniawan Wibowo as the Dean of SOD-UPH stated that by inviting Mr. James and Raymond Wang, the faculty hoped that they can be an example to inspire the students. Mr. James Wang’s works throughout his long career journey are still enjoyed and even can be considered as classics. Scooby-Doo, Tazmania, Tom & Jerry and Winnie the Pooh are just a few works of Wang Film Production. Based on the limitation of technology at his time, his achievements were remarkable.

The Faculty of Design and Visual Communication Design Study Program UPH also expected that the students do not only consider animation and cinematography as a product, but also as a way to solve a problem or issue faced by humanity and the society. They hoped that an audio visual message can convey a meaningful message. Many meaningful messages seen clearly in the works of UPH students. For example, there was a short film titled “Unfinished” which raise the issue of mental illness and bullying. There was also a documentary film about ballet dancers in Indonesia that have not been appreciated well by Indonesian society.

In relation to this film screening, UPH hopes to have a collaboration with other universities and also with the cinema industry. Cinemaxx is one of the company which had collaborated with UPH. This year is the second year that Cinemaxx sponsored this film screening. Representative of Cinemaxx stated, “It is a good thing to collaborate with UPH. The local film industry has increased in quality and it can begin from UPH. We hope that this collaboration can be continued and developed.” (IA)
